Marketing In Non-Sexy Industries: An Interview With Author and Social Media Marketer Sebastian Rusk

You might want to sit down for this. There are couple things that you may or may not know. First, there are not a gratuitous amount of industrial manufacturing brands owning all the inter-webs and social channels. Secondly, social media marketing for an industrial manufacturing company is not like taking candy from a baby. Lastly, this might shock you, but a tweet about a new forklift is not usually trending alongside Katy Perry’s. Ok, so we’re all taking our proverbial ball and going home, right? Wrong.

“Social Media is over-throwing governments in the Middle-East, do you really have the audacity to think it’s not affecting your business?” –Gary Vaynerchuk

That’s the tagline on Sebastian Rusk’s email signature.  Luckily, I had the opportunity to meet our guest on the blog today at a recent social media conference in Orlando, FL. It’s a cakewalk to make new friends at a conference when every reception and meal includes the phrase “networking” in front of it. Ironically, it’s also easy to meet a published author when you coincidentally park next to them. Rusk is our blog guest today and is here to give businesses a few pointers to tackle the beast that is social media.

Sebastian, thank you for joining us on the Mixer Direct blog!

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do?

Sebastian: I’m the Founder and Creator of Buzz for SocialBuzzTV.com – we are and integrated marketing solution that helps businesses build online communities using social media to create social buzz and local celebrity over their products and services which increases their online presence and word of mouth marketing so they have more customers and die-hard fans.

You currently live in Miami, have a book published (with the foreword by a New York Times Best-Selling Author), and are the Founder & CEO of socialbuzztv.com. Sounds like you are having a rough year? Could you give us a snapshot view of your journey in the business world thus far?

Sebastian: LOL! Yes, very rough. Mac and Cheese and Top Ramen are an EXCELLENT snapshot of the past 4 years, but well worth it! There was never a mention of ‘easy’ 😉

What is the big picture idea of your new book “Social Media Sucks”?

Sebastian: I want people to know what they dont’ know that they don’t know. I want to tell my story on a larger platform and give my two cents on where we are all with this giant we refer to as social media.

What 3 social platforms are a necessity for businesses?

Sebastian: Twitter, a Blog, and Facebook.

What advice would you give to those utilizing social media in “non-sexy” industries?

Sebastian: Just do it. It doesn’t matter if it’s not sexy, it’s about telling the story of your brand and becoming the go-to source for what you do. Sexy is not always needed.

What do you think is the key to posting good “thinking outside the box” content?

Sebastian: Be edgy, be human, and take risks.

Do you think businesses should help each other on social media?

Sebastian: Yes, share the wealth, there is plenty to go around.

How can businesses practically help one another?

Sebastian: Share each others content, get involved with things like Twitter chats, etc. If you want people to share your stuff, make sure you’re sharing and interacting with other peoples content.

What are some of the biggest mistakes businesses can make in social marketing?

Sebastian: Selling, pushing and shoving their message down the throats of their audience.

What is your favorite social platform?

Sebastian: Instagram. It’s short and simple

Where can we find you online and where can we get our hands on that book?
